A little girl named Samantha was given up for adoption to two loving parents soon after birth. She was then taken to Tulsa with her younger sister where she thrived!
She was a very smart kid. She was showing flying colors in her grades! She also made it into valedictorian AND homecoming queen at her high school. Later she graduated and chose her major in Public Relations at Oklahoma State University.
She is now a happily married mother of two little children. She is living her best life. But, any adopted child wishes to meet their birth parents someday.
Research shows that around 65% of adopted teens wish to know who their birth parents are.
Samantha was not any different. She wanted to meet her birth parents too. This was her second attempt to dig out information about her birth parents. The only thing she has of her birth parents is a letter, a blanket, and a photo at the adoption agency for her in case she needed to reach out to find them.
But, sad news struck her immediately after she began her quest to find her birth parents. All the photographs that they had left were destroyed months before she started her second attempt to find them. Not only that, but she also had lost one of the crucial things needed to find her birth parents, the adoption files. They were gone as well. She lost all hopes of finding her birth parents.
But luckily she was able to access her original birth certificate, which had her mother’s name printed on it: Valerie Lopez.
Samantha searched for her name everywhere! Samantha was also aware that her mother was only a teenager (19) when she gave birth to her, and with that information, Samantha narrowed her search which led to 10,000 results. After a thorough digging she came across three high possibilities.
She used that information to find her on Facebook, and what do you know, her hard work finally paid off. She found a woman who looked exactly like her. She was start struck and couldn’t even get the words straight. There’s no manual on what to say when you find your birth parents. It was definitely an emotional time for Samantha!
She made a call, left a voicemail, and sent an e-mail explaining who she was and included the birth details.
She waited with bated breath over the next four long days, before finally getting a response.
She had contacted the right Valerie Lopez, who responded:
Samantha quickly exchanged their contact information and arranged to talk on the phone in a heartbeat. Samantha learned that her birth parents ended up getting married four years after giving her up for adoption. They had three more children together, and she was blown away to find she had three full younger siblings.
She thought maybe she should have half-siblings but never expected her birth parents to be married after putting a baby up for adoption so young. The couple had since divorced but were happily married for years. Samantha and her mother spoke every day for a month, crying, laughing, and learning about each other.
She learned that her parents had never told anyone about her. Not their families when they got pregnant in college, and not their children. Valerie passed the news on to Samantha’s father, Eddy, and he was elated.
She was overwhelmed by how emotional he was when she spoke to him. He said all the right things and told her how much he loved her even though he didn’t know her.
She couldn’t explain why, but it felt like too much. Things had moved much more slowly with her mother and she wasn’t ready for such an emotional response. But they worked through it one step at a time.
Her parents eventually sat down to share the news with their other children and passed on a letter Samantha wrote to them. None of them had any idea how the siblings would take it. But they were all happy to hear it! They were keen to meet Samantha, so the whole family arranged to meet up a month later, including Samantha’s husband and two children.
It was nerve-wracking, but as soon as she arrived she was embraced by both parents, and her family was welcomed into theirs with open arms.
It was an emotional roller coaster from start to finish, but Samantha finally found what she was looking for.
She’s glad she never gave up her search.
